GOWANDA – There will be five fewer familiar faces at Gowanda next school year. The Gowanda Board of Education approved five teacher retirements at a recent board meeting.

The board approved, with regret, the retirement resignations of grade 6 teacher Susan Borrello, elementary reading teacher Suzanne Regan, grade 2 teacher Janis Samarra, elementary art teacher Maryanne Belasik and speech language pathologist Margaret Kota.

“Every time you see (retirements), you’re happy for them and glad they’re on their way and moving into a new part of life, but those individuals represent so much of the heart and soul of the elementary school and the middle school, in particular,” said Superintendent Charles Rinaldi. “These are wonderful names who have really done a great job in the school.”

All the retirements are effective June 30 with the exception of Kota’s retirement, which is effective Aug. 31. Rinaldi spoke of how the five women will be missed at the district.

“Personally, I’m going to miss them a lot. I know I speak for others when I say that these are really great ladies and we’re going to have a little hole, a big hole actually, when they go. I want to wish them well and thank them for their service. They have done a great job,” Rinaldi said.

The board of education also approved Grace Dudek and Kristina Brinkel as substitute teachers. Dudek was also appointed as a substitute teaching assistant and substitute school monitor and Elizabeth Tonello was approved as a substitute teaching assistant.

The board also accepted a donation of $200 from the United Way of Gowanda Inc., to the Learn to Swim Program for adult/com-munity education.
