George J. Taber
George J. Taber of Cottage Road, Cottage/South Dayton, NY went to be with our Lord and Savior on March 30, 2014.
He was born May 15, 1945 in Gowanda, NY, the son of the late George and Agnes (Hatch) Taber. He married Susan Fischer on Sept. 24, 1971; they had three children.
George worked at the Glue Factory, the Gowanda Psychiatric Center, Notaro Farms and delivered laundry for Leisners Cleaners, until his early retirement in 1988.
He was a life member of the Helmuth Fire Department and a devoted member of the Loyal Order of the Moose having held numerous positions in the order with the most recent as District President at the State Level. He was a member of the Legion of the Moose and the Slovenian Club.
George was the caretaker of the Cottage Cemetery for the past 25 years, taking pride in how the grounds looked and would spend numerous hours trimming and mowing the lawns. He loved his John Deere tractor.
Besides his wife Susan, he is survived by two sons, Brian and Daniel; three daughters, Jennifer (Jim) Keller, Renee (Chris) McKeever, Theresa (Ron) Bergum and daughter- in-law, Sherry Taber. He was “Poppie” to Amber and Alyssa McKeever and Gabrielle Taber. Grandfather of Allyson and James Keller, Bobbie and Ashley (Robertson) Taber, Ron and Samantha Bergum and great-grandfather of four. Brother of Janice Wolfe of Sun City, AZ, and Larry Taber of Perrysburg. Also surviving are numerous- in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert, in October 2013; a brother, Harold; and a sister, Ruth.
Friends may call at the Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St., North Collins on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where funeral ser-vices will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to the Free Methodist Church of Gowanda Building Fund.
