Burgess, Jonston combine for no-hitter

WESTFIELD – Rob Burgess and Brandon Jonston combined for a no-hitter as the Westfield Wolverines rolled to a 27-0 victory over Panama in six innings on Wednesday in CCAA West II boys high school baseball.

Rob Burgess pitched a perfect five innings as he struck out 13 batters and walked one. Burgess struck out the first 10 batters he faced. Jonston closed the deal with three strikeouts.

The Panthers put the ball in play twice with a groundout and a pop fly to the pitcher.

“It was just a dominating pitching performance,” Westfield coach Doug Kaltenbach said. “Rob hardly threw any balls. He pitched great. I don’t remember a performance that dominating, as far as strikeouts. (With that many strikeouts), it makes it easy for the rest of us.”

Jonston had the hot bat as well with four hits, including two doubles, to drive in five runs. Nolan Hunt went 4-for-4 with two doubles and seven RBI while Burgess had three hits with a double and four RBI.

NORTH COLLINS – For playing outside for the first time this season, it did not impact Pine Valley pitcher Winfred Nelson as he threw a complete game in lifting the Panthers to a 9-4 victory over the North Collins Eagles on Wednesday in CCAA East II high school baseball.

Nelson fanned 10 batters and did not issue a walk while yielding eight hits.

“He has good velocity and he was all over the plate,” North Collins coach Paul Kellner said.

“His control was outstanding for being his first time out. He changed speeds well. We had one inning and then didn’t mount much of a threat.”

The Eagles scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Harley Mehnert and a RBI single by Chris Pulinski.

Mehnert and Jacob Jasinski each had two hits and an RBI in defeat.

Pine Valley’s No. 7 hitter, Alex Kelly, had a fine day as he had three doubles to go with his one RBI and run scored. Thomas Raiport had two hits, an RBI and three runs while Jacob Wilcox had two hits, as many RBI and as many runs. The Panthers combined for six doubles and two triples. Raiport and Nelson accounted for the triples in the win.
