Johnston, doubles lift Fredonia past Maple Grove, 3-2
BEMUS POINT – The Fredonia Hillbillies received a strong performance from their doubles teams in defeating Maple Grove, 3-2, Wednesday in CCAA boys high school tennis action.
The first doubles team of Kyle Leysath and Mike Johnson defeated George Kerr and Brandon Greiner, 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, in second doubles, the team of John Piper and Dustin Wickmark downed Pat Crosley and Pat Nelson, 6-2, 6-1.
The highlight match came at first singles as Fredonia’s Nick Johnston rallied past Riley Beaton, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6, in a match which lasted more than two hours.
“It was a great first game for Fredonia,” Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston said. “It was the first time outside this year. Nick won a hard-fought match that lasted over two hours. Both doubles teams showed dominance at the net and had great wins.”
The Hillbillies return to action today at Jamestown.
