NCCS to hold open house today

The Northern Chautau-qua Catholic School will be hosting an open house today from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Opportunities include playschool for 3 year olds in the morning on Mondays and Wednesday, pre-school for 3 and 4 years olds in the morning on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and full-day pre-kindergarten for 4 year olds.

Plant future to be discussed today

Doug Manly, Fredonia resident and former Red Wing president, will be speaking to the Rotary Club of Dunkirk on what this area can do now that ConAgra has decided to close the facility.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the presentation, which begins after a lunch at 12:15 p.m. today at the Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk. There is a $10.50 fee for the lunch.

Literacy Volunteers schedule book sale Saturday in Dunkirk

Literacy Volunteers will hold a book sale at 21 East Bookstore, 21 E. Second St., the Washington Avenue entrance in Dunkirk on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The costs are: paperbacks $.50, hardcovers, $1, and children’s books $.25.

There are also some specially priced books.

Come browse, take home some bargains, and assist Literacy volunteers in their work of promoting literacy.

Hydrant flushing to begin in Westfield

The Village of Westfield Water Department will flush hydrants within the water district during the weeks April 14 through May 2 (Monday-Friday) from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

They will be starting at the highest point (south) and proceed to the lowest end (north.)

The water will be slightly discolored and caution should be taken with regard to washing clothes. Despite the color, the water at no time will be unsafe to drink.

The Water Department is sorry for any inconvenience that his may cause residents.

FES to hold chicken dinner for pediatric cancer Thursday

The Fredonia Elementary School will hold a benefit chicken dinner event Thursday in the elementary cafeteria from 4 to 7 p.m.

All proceeds will benefit childhood pediatric cancer research and will help defray medical expenses for two students’ siblings that have been fighting pediatric cancer for several months, as well as a beloved elementary school teacher that has been diagnosed with cancer and has been out of school since Winter Break.

This is the second year in a row for the benefit dinner, which features Chiavetta’s chicken.

Spring Egg Hunt

set for Sunday on

Dr. Horvath’s lawn

A Spring Egg Hunt is scheduled at SUNY Fredonia President Dr. Virginia Horvath’s lawn on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

The location is 194 Central Ave., Fredonia, with parking available in Fenton Hall adjacent to the President’s property. Chautauqua

County children ages 2-10 are invited. The afternoon will feature arts and crafts, a petting zoo and prizes for the winners of the egg hunt.

The event is hosted by SUNY Fredonia Delta Chi Fraternity.

Town of Dunkirk Planning Board

The Town of Dunkirk Planning Board has scheduled a workshop and meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road.

The purpose of the meeting is continue discussion and review on the implementation of a comprehensive plan.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career!

Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 0.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.73/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.55/g, according to gasoline price website

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 9.1 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are unchanged versus a month ago.

The national average has increased 7.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 3.1 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Communitywide yard sales in Mayville, Chautauqua May 24

The Mayville/Chautau-qua Community Chamber of Commerce will host the annual communitywide yard sales for the Mayville and Chautauqua areas on May 24.

All Mayville and Chau-tauqua area residents are invited and encouraged to participate at this event.
