Hole causes detour
You may have to adjust your travel plans for a while today as the city of Dunkirk Department of Public Works has announced a temporary closing of a portion of a major city thoroughfare.
Central Avenue in the city of Dunkirk is closed between Willowbrook Avenue and Green Street today for repairs to a private sewer connection that has collapsed. Signs have been posted for alternate routes around the site for smaller vehicles to use. Heavy truck traffic will be directed onto Newton Street, Main Street Extension, Williams Street and Vineyard Drive.
The hole was dug on Tuesday morning by city crews to see what caused a large dip in the road that has grown recently. After determining a private sewer lateral connection had collapsed, the city notified the property owner of the condition.
According to DPW officials, tracks from the old trolley system that ran from Dunkirk to Fredonia are the only thing holding the road in place.
Due to the scope of the work and need to mobilize necessary equipment, private contractors were scheduled to begin work on the repairs today. That portion of Central Avenue will be closed until the repairs are completed and road repairs are made.
Motorists are advised to drive carefully through the affected areas.
