Meredith picks up first win as T’birds blank Panthers
RIPLEY – Freshman pitcher Tyler Meredith pitched a gem Wednesday in leading the Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds (2-0, 1-0) to an 11-0 victory over Panama in CCAA West II high school baseball.
Meredith pitched a complete game and struck out 14 and allowed just one hit while tossing 109 pitches.
Offensively, the Thunderbirds’ Ian Clute led the offense with two hits, three runs scored and five RBI. Cody Sargent added a double and drove in three runs for the winners.
For Panama, Josh Giddy broke up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a line-drive single.
The Thunderbirds host Westfield today at Ripley.
Westfield 3, Brocton 0
WESTFIELD – Westfield’s pitching staff continued its dominance Wednesday in pitching the Wolverines to a 3-0 shutout victory over Brocton in CCAA West II high school baseball.
Of a possible 60 outs through the first three games of the season, Westfield opponents have struck out 46 times.
Starting pitcher Nolan Hunt recorded nine strikeouts and did not give up a hit while Brandon Johnston finished the job with two strikeouts and allowed one hit to preserve the victory.
The Wolverines scored two runs in the first inning as Johnston doubled on the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a Jonathan Wilson RBI single. Wilson stole second and scored on a Joe Quagliana RBI single.
Westfield’s third and final run came in the third inning as Hunt walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a Tanner Dahl sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs received a stellar pitching performance from Ryan Johnson, who threw a complete game, giving up six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
The Wolverines travel to Ripley today to take on Chautauqua Lake while Brocton hosts Cassadaga Valley.
Pine Valley 14, Franklinville 2
FRANKLINVILLE – Winfred Nelson did it all on the mound and at the plate Wednesday in a 14-2 victory over Franklinville in CCAA East II high school baseball action.
On the mound, Nelson pitched a complete game as he struck out 11, gave up seven hits and walked just one batter. At the plate, Nelson went 2-for-3 with a double.
The Panthers scored four runs in the first, four runs in the third and three runs in the sixth to spread out the onslaught. Aiding Pine Valley’s win was the fact Franklinville committed five errors.
Merle Wheeler had two hits with a double for the winners while Thomas Raiport tripled in the win.
North Collins 13,
West Valley 4
NORTH COLLINS – Brandon Zielinski went 3 for 3 at the plate and picked up the win on the mound Wednesday as North Collins (2-2, 1-1) cruised past West Valley (0-1), 13-4, in CCAA East II baseball action.
The Eagles scored early and often as they plated two runs in the first, five in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and a final run in the fifth. Zielinski’s three-run double highlighted the Eagles’ five-run second while Austin Winter added a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
“I was just pleased with the way our pitchers threw the ball over the plate,” North Collins coach Paul Kellner said.
Zielinski allowed two runs over three innings while striking out three and walking four, before Winter came in and finished the game allowing two runs while striking out four and walking one.
Jared Ras had an RBI double in the loss for the Wildcats.

GOWANDA – The Gowanda Panthers put together two dominating performances Wednesday in a doubleheader against Salamanca in CCAA East I high school baseball.
Joey Kruszka was the winning pitcher in the opening game as the Panthers prevailed, 25-1.
In the second game, Ryan Boutelle picked up the win on the mound in a 28-0 shutout after just two innings.
At the plate, Boutelle had three doubles, a triple and drove in five runs. Kruszka had three hits on the day for Gowanda.
