Big fourth inning gives Brocton win
BROCTON – Brocton’s Jess Putcher went the distance in the circle and provided a two-run double in a five-run bottom of the fourth inning as the Lady Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1) held on for a 10-8 CCAA West II softball win over Cassadaga Valley (0-1, 0-1) on Thursday.
Putcher allowed eight runs – four earned – on eight hits while striking out nine and walking three in the win and added three hits at the plate. Also for the Lady Bulldogs, Morgan Bennett and Mackenzie Evans had two hits and two RBI apiece.
The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, before the Lady Bulldogs broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Brocton added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth while Cassadaga Valley scored a run in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Bre Miller had an RBI double in the loss while losing pitcher Alyssa Hahn added two hits and two RBI while allowing 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits. She struck out five and walked as many.
CLCS 12. Westfield 4
RIPLEY – Ryleigh Hawkins and Ashley Moulton provided the offense Thursday as the Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds (3-0, 3-0) downed Westfield (3-1, 2-1), 12-4, in CCAA West II high school softball.
Hawkins went 3 for 3 with two doubles while Moulton had three hits. Ashton Albanesius picked up a double in the win.
Jade Walsh began the game in the circle for Chautauqua Lake and yielded just two hits and a walk in three innings of work, before being replaced by Olivia Anderson, who struck out four and surrendered just one hit.
Westfield’s only hits belonged to Rachel Allen, who had two hits with a double. doubled and a single and Cathryn Catalano singled in defeat.
West Valley 1
WEST VALLEY – Alisha Szumigala made the most of her first varsity start in the circle as the Forestville senior allowed a run on one hit while striking out 12 and walking three in the Lady Hornets’ (1-0, 1-0) 9-1 season-opening win over West Valley (0-2, 0-2) Thursday during CCAA East II softball action.
“She did an excellent job for her first time going out there and being our starting pitcher,” Forestville coach Brianne Hazelton said. “She kept hitting her spots and mixing up her pitches. She did a great job.”
Szumigala added a pair of hits and an RBI at the plate while Lydia Burger went 2 for 3 with an RBI of her own. Sam Jackson added a double in the win.
Silver Creek 6, Frewsburg 2
SILVER CREEK – A day after losing 14-0 to Jamestown, the Silver Creek Black Knights (1-1) rebounded with an impressive 6-2 victory over Frewsburg in CCAA West I high school softball.
Allison Harford was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts, no walks and eight hits allowed.
The Black Knights scored four runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Darrien Spruce.
Spruce led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance while Christina Williams had two hits in the win.
“After we lost to Jamestown (Wednesday) I am proud of the way the girls bounced back and came out on top,” Silver Creek coach Stacie Bauer said. “We got our bats going and had much better defense.”
Silver Creek will host Brocton on Monday.
