Safe Boating & Jet Ski Class scheduled at Sheridan VFW Post May 10

SHERIDAN – U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-2 is offering an eight-hour About Boating Safely class on May 10 at the Sheridan Memorial VFW Post 6390, located at 2556 Route 20 in Sheridan. The class begins at 8:05 a.m. sharp and ends at approximately 5 p.m.

The cost of the course is $40 with the book and $20 if two people share the book. Participants are advised to register as soon as possible to ensure placement in the course.

According to New York state law, all jet-ski operators must successfully complete this course. Beginning on May 1 this year, a new state law goes into effect. It states that individuals born on or after May 1, 1996, who are at least 10 years of age, are required to successfully complete a boating course to be able to operate a power boat.

Individuals who successfully complete this course may be entitled to a 10 percent discount on their boat insurance.

Family Martial Arts Center offers self defense classes free

With the overwhelming demand for self defense, the Family Martial Arts Center has decided to host the free service so the community has the opportunity to learn techniques that will not only help them to feel safe but also allow them to be more confident in many choices.

The class will be offered Monday, April 14 and 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 and 23 from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and Saturday, April 19 and 26 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. for children ages 6 to 18. Registration will take place today from 9 a.m. to noon and Monday prior to class.

Take the entire two weeks of classes free at Family Martial Arts Center 355 Central Ave., Fredonia (use the LA Nails entrance).

All students will receive equal attention and will be taught the fundamentals of the martial arts. In today’s world there is experiencing a higher percentage of peer pressure, bullying and crime. Family Martial Arts Center’s program is designed to help increase preparedness and awareness to escape these situations. And with the summer approaching, children are looking for activities. The program is designed to keep children active and yet educated in a disciplined sport. At the end of the program if they are interested in registering the center will offer a promotional package which includes a rate discount and a free uniform. No families will be turned away no matter their financial situation.

Parents or guardians only pay $5 per month with child registration. Military, college and law enforcement discounts do apply.
