CVCS seeking principal plus an assistant

SINCLAIRVILLE – The administration at Cassadaga Valley Central School District will undergo more changes in the near future.

The district is looking to fill some administrative vacancies within the next two months, according to two announcements on its website.

Those positions include an elementary principal and a middle/high school principal assistant.

The announcements state that candidates should have prior teaching experience at either or both the elementary and middle/high school levels.

According to Thomas Schmidt, interim superintendent, the vacancies came about through an administrative restructuring that involves consolidation, among other factors.

“We haven’t lost anybody, or fired anybody,” Schmidt said. “We’ve had a retirement and a change of appointment because we needed help in another area.”

Schmidt said the board’s appointment of Josh Gilevski as interim high school principal last year, following an incident which saw the departure of the district’s previous superintendent and high school principal, is coming to its termination.

“We hired Josh, at that point, as interim principal for the high school,” Schmidt said. “He’s done a great job, and he’s already been approved by the board for a three-year probationary contract as middle school and high school principal – which is a regular, full-time appointment.”

In November, the district faced a shakeup at the leadership level when former superintendent, Scott Smith, resigned following questions about his “interactions with another district employee.” Additionally, Dr. Tara DiDomenico, who was serving as high school principal at the time of the incident, was placed on administrative leave. DiDomenico’s contract with Cassadaga Valley will expire June 30.

Schmidt said the district currently employs both a middle school and high school principal in the same building, a structure he said needs to change. Gilevski’s contract will go into effect July 1.

The assistant position is being created as Rich Siegel, current middle school principal, is retiring at the end of the school year. Schmidt said the board has decided to replace that position with that of an assistant to Gilevksi.

On the elementary side, Schmidt said current principal John Kwietniewski is being reassigned to the position of curriculum coordinator and Committee for Special Education coordinator – a role he said Kwietniewski has previous experience in, and needed to be addressed by the district.

“John is doing a good job, but he has some special skills and we need to work with our special education program in terms of curriculum,” Schmidt said.

The elementary principal announcement indicates that the individual to be selected for the position will also serve as the district’s consolidated application coordinator and coordinator of the home instruction program.

Both vacancies are currently open, and the district will be accepting applications through April 21. Schmidt said interviews will be held within the following two weeks of the deadline, and the positions will need to be filled and approved by the board prior to July 1.

Applications can be found on the district’s website at cassadaga.ny.schoolwebpages.com, and should be addressed to Thomas Schmidt at the district’s postal address.
