Lady T’birds pick up second win at Grand Strand Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds (5-1, 3-0) put together a 16-5 win over the Alabama Bulldogs on Wednesday at the Grand Strand Classic.

Olivia Anderson was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts, five walks and two earned runs on six hits.

The score was knotted 1-1 going into the top of the third before Chautauqua Lake sent 12 batters to the plate to score nine runs.

The big hitter for the day was Kalishia Swoger with two hits and four runs scored. Gina Sena had two hits with a double and Jade Walsh connected for a home run in the third inning, which accounted for three runs.

The Lady Thunderbirds take on the Obion Rebels from Tennessee at 8 a.m. today.

Meanwhile, the Cassadaga Valley Lady Cougars fell to Penn-Yan, 8-7.

Penn Yan took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first, but Cassadaga Valley came back with one of its own in the bottom of the inning. Olivia Ruiz led off with a single, stole second and was driven home by a double by Brooke Johnson.

The Lady Cougars then loaded the bases, but were unable to plate another run.

Penn-Yan scored four unearned runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead.

Cassadaga Valley stormed back with five runs of its own in the fourth inning. With one out, Joie Horton hit a triple followed by another single by. Ruiz. Johnson reached on an error, Kylee Braymiller singled to plate Ruiz an Allysa Hahn followed with a ground-rule double to bring home Johnson. Madison Reuther singled to bring home Braymiller and Hahn.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Cassadaga Valley took the lead, 7-6, after Joie Horton doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and was sacrificed home by Ruiz. Unfortunately, Penn-Yan plated a run in the top half of the sixth and the top half of the seventh to hand the Lady Cougars the 8-7 defeat.

Jenna Caskey was the hard0luck loser, scattering eight singles and two walks. Cassadaga Valley’s defense committed seven errors behind her, leading to all eight Penn-Yan runs. Offensively, Ruiz had three hits, Horton had a double and triple, Allysa Hahn had two doubles and Kylee Braymiller had two hits in defeat. Brooke Johnson added a double for the Lady Cougars.
