Dunkirk library seeks donations for sale

Donations are being accepted now until June 2 at the Dunkirk Free Library for the annual Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library summer book sale, to be held on June 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Gently-used and pre-loved books, magazines, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs and cassette tapes will be appreciated. No textbooks, newspapers or encyclopedias can be accepted.

All proceeds from the book sale will be used for library programs and improvements.

Sheridan Fire Department Easter party Saturday

The Sheridan Fire De-partment Ladies’ Auxiliary will hold its annual Easter party on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the fire hall on Route 20.

The party is for Sheridan residents, their children, and their grandchildren. Activities will include an egg hunt, games, cupcake decorating, etc.

Dress accordingly for the weather.

Reed’s staff schedules office hours in area next week

Tom Reed’s staff will hold office hours Tuesday in the town of Hanover and the village of Fredonia. Reed’s staff will be at the Hanover Town Hall, 68 Hanover St. in Silver Creek from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., staff will be at the Fredonia Village Hall, 9 Church St., in the Trustee Room to answer any questions and gather feedback.

Reed will also hold town halls on April 26 in Chau-tauqua, Cattaraugus and Al-legany counties. The town hall in Chautauqua County will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Chautauqua Municipal Building, 2 Academy St. in Mayville. Details can be found on Reed’s website,

The village of Fredonia’s overnight winter parking ban for village streets is over.

Safety Village Easter Carnival Saturday

Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village presents its annual Easter Carnival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Children’s Safety Village, 2695 Route 394, Ashville (next to BOCES Hewes Education Center).

The Easter Parade will begin at noon. There will also be food and drinks for sale, candy and prizes including a grand prize drawing for a bike, face painting, kettle corn, a free child ID workshop, train rides, a silent auction, children’s crafts, cotton candy, carnival games including a corn hole playoff, nerf target shoot, ping pong toss and more.

The Easter bunny will make a visit for pictures with the children.

The cost of admission is $2 or free for children 2 and under.

Dayton to host dog enumeration

The town of Dayton will be conducting a dog enumeration from Monday through June 30. The dog enumerator will visit all town residences in the town of Dayton and village of South Dayton to identify the number of dogs at each residence.

In the event a dog is found to be unlicensed, the owner will be required to license that dog within 20 days of receipt of notice. Dogs found to be unlicensed or having an expired license during the enumeration period shall be subject to an $8 enumeration fee in addition to the regular license fee.

To license a dog, bring a current rabies certificate and proof of spay/neuter, if applicable, to the town clerk’s office at 9100 Route 62, South Dayton. Any questions contact the town clerk at 532-3758.

Fredonia church to sponsor 3,000 Easter egg hunt Saturday

Two years ago, Christ Community Church held a 1,000 Easter egg hunt. Last year the church increased that to a 2,000 egg hunt. Now this year, as part of its Easter celebration, the church, located at 219 Berry Road, Fredonia, will hold a 3,000 Easter egg hunt on the church grounds Saturday.

The egg hunt, which will take place at 11 a.m., is open to all children in the community fifth grade and under. Younger children will have their own area for the egg hunt.

Children will also get the chance to make a craft and get a snack.

Children should dress appropriately for the weather. If necessary the hunt will be moved indoors.

Versailles Easter egg hunt Saturday

An Easter egg hunt will be held at the Versailles town park on Saturday at 10 a.m. All residents are encouraged to attend and the Easter Bunny will be there.

Silver Creek CSD announces pre-K and kindergarten registration dates

Pre-kindergarten registration for children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2014 and live in the Silver Creek District will be held on May 29 and May 30.

Kindergarten registration and screening will be held on May 27 and May 28 for children who are eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2014.

Students who are currently enrolled in this school year’s Universal Pre-K Program do not need to register.

Senior Citizen Breakfast May 3 in Brocton

The Brocton Central School Interact Club will host a Senior Citizen Breakfast for all Brocton-Portland area seniors on May 3 at 10 a.m. in the school cafeteria.

After breakfast, tours of the school will be given. RSVP to Linda Miller at 792-2173 prior to Thursday.

Hula Hooping offered at SCCS

It’s time to get out of the house and move that body. Join us at Silver Creek Central for Hula Hooping classes. Come learn the basics of waist, hip and chest hooping, and maybe a few more tricks. Hoops are available to use during class.

There will be five classes on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. in the elementary gym beginning April 28. Registration fee is $25.

Gowanda Board of Education petitions due Monday

Candidates wishing to run for office to fill three three-year terms on the Gowanda Board of Education must file a petition with the district clerk.

Each petition must be signed by a minimum of 25 qualified voters of the district and be filed with the district clerk by Monday.

Petitions may be filed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
