VOLUNTEERS: Coming out for support

One of the greatest community connections for any resident is its fire department.

That being said, Saturday and Sunday are important for all county fire agencies. As with any endeavor that is happening locally, the number of volunteers continue to dwindle for a number of reasons.

An effort this weekend, a recruitment effort aims to boost those numbers. “This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter,” said First Assistant Chief Kurt Maytum. “Our current members love what they do; they are everyday heroes who help neighbors in need. We hope our recruitment day will inspire other area residents to join our fire service family.”

Nearly 500 companies statewide are participating in this event. On Saturday, area departments are hosting events include: Cassadaga, Cherry Creek, East Dunkirk, Fredonia, Gowanda, Portland, Silver Creek, Sinclairville, Stockton, Sunset Bay, West Dunkirk and Westfield. Hanover is having its event Saturday and Sunday.
