Well-known Silver Creek resident celebrates 90th birthday
Clara Hubbard Griffin was born in Fredonia on April 25, 1924 to Ralph M. Hubbard and Leah Stone Hubbard. She grew up on the family grape farm on E. Main Road. She and her sister, Elinor, walked to Sheridan #8 School. She made many lifelong friends at Sheridan #8 and Fredonia High.
She went to Dunkirk Business School. She worked at Fredonia Hardware and then Citizens Trust Bank until February 1946. Right after high school, on a double date, she met “the love of her life,” Jim Griffin from Silver Creek. Jim was not her date, but that soon changed. She continued working at the bank until Jim came home from the service. They were married on March 23, 1946. Jim and Clara had three children, Donna, Janet, and David. They lived on a grape farm in Hanover where Clara still resides. Clara toiled, alongside Jim, helping out on the farm. She has tied many a grape vine!
She has been very active in many organizations over the years – Farm Bureau, Country Life, numerous activities at the First United Church, and Eastern Star, just to name a few. Until very recently, she was secretary of both the Silver Creek Seniors and the Sheridan Seniors.
Clara has been blessed with four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She loves family get-togethers. The family will celebrate her birthday with a dinner at the Colony Restaurant today and she will be honored at an Open House at the First United Church on Sunday.
