Katie Atkins is pictured holding her award from the New York News Publishers Association. Atkins won the 2012-2013 Distinguished Headline Writing Award of Excellence in the newspapers under 10,000 circulation for the headline “All fired up: Fuse lit between Cannon and Ball,” regarding the feud between Arkwright Town Council candidates Chris Cannon and Larry Ball. The same headline also won second place from the New York Associated Press Award’s under 15,000 circulation category. This is the second time an OBSERVER headline has won the NYNPA contest. Diane Chodan last did it in 2010-2011, for her headline “It takes talent to be a dummy,” for a county fair event with a ventriloquist.
