Big fifth inning helps Westfield past Maple Grove
WESTFIELD – Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Westfield Lady Wolverines exploded for four runs as they went on to defeat Maple Grove, 6-3, in non-league softball action Saturday.
“The little ball worked early and the big ball worked later,” Westfield coach Dave Luder said.
Amy Meleen singled and stole second to get the Lady Wolverines going before Olivia Knapp chased her home with a triple to tie the game. Katy Catalano then chased Knapp home with an infield single, which set up Rachel Allen, who smashed a two-run homer for the game’s final margin.
Laura Tofil went the distance for Westfield, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking five, four of which were in the Lady Red Dragons’ three-run fourth inning.
“Laura threw real nice,” Luder said. “Except for that one inning. She went through 10 batters in three innings and eight batters in (the fourth inning). Then, just 11 batters in the last three innings. She’s going to be good.”
Catalano finished with two hits while Meleen reached base safely three times in the win.
For Maple Grove, Meg Nolan went 2 for 2 in the loss.
