Gillis J. Mancuso

Gillis J. Mancuso, 85, of Fredonia went to be with the angels Friday evening (April 25, 2014) at Brooks Memorial Hospital.He was born June 8,

1928 in Sheridan, New York to the late Jack and Rose (Lombardo) Mancuso. Gillis was married for 51 years to Shirley (Austin) Mancuso. They married on

August 8, 1962. A lifetime area resident, he retired from both the United States Naval Reserves and AL Tech Specialty Steel. Throughout his life he

had served as President of the Fredonia Beaver Club and was a member of St. Joseph’s RC Church in Fredonia for 50 years. There he served as Bingo Chairman, as well as a Parish Council member for many years. During that time he was the recipient of the St. Joseph the Lay Worker award. Gillis also achieved the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and was a member of the honor guard. He was also active in Loyal Order of the Moose #89, Fredonia Little League, Fredonia Parks Committee and Fredonia Auxiliary Police. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed watching the Yankees and the Bills.

He loved dining at Aunt Millie’s where he went to visit his girls. In his later years, Gillis enjoyed playing golf at Lakeside Golf Course. Besides his wife, he is survived by his nine children, Deborah (Richard) Thomas of Dunkirk, LouAnne (Paul) Lundgren of Averille Park, Rev. Dennis J. Mancuso of Cuba,

April (Robert) Smith of Silver Creek, Danita (Bruce) Harrison of North Tonawanda, Frank (Lissa) Mancuso of LaPorte, IN, Tammy (Bob) Rettig of

Cherry Creek, Anthony Mancuso of Buffalo and Juli (Brian) Zampogna of Jamestown. Also survived by his grandchildren who meant so much to him: Penelope (Kevin), Andrew, Quintina (Jim), Emily (Matthew), Jessica, Josh, Samantha, Joseph (Josh), Derrick (Allie), Zandra (Jordan), Nicole, Frank Jr., Samantha, Zachary (Katie), Stephanie, Aaron, Sam, Amelia, Jakob, Joshua, and Tony; his great grandchildren, Zakk, Aaron, David, Gabriella, Damon, Brianna, Alex, Ian, Aidan, Edward, Owen, Vivian and Savannah; and his great-great grandchild Atlas; and siblings Mary Zappo of Buffalo, Carm Gens of Florida, Charlie Mancuso of Fredonia and Roseanna Ciancio of West Seneca. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gillis J. Mancuso

Also by his brothers, Joe, Stanley, Sam, Russell Mancuso and his sisters, Jennie Abounder, Phyllis Vandette, and Lucy McCormick.Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 o’ clock in St. Joseph Church in Fredonia (Please use side entrance). Calling hours will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers,

memorials may be made to the Brooks Memorial Hospital Dialysis Unit or the Fredonia Fire Department.
