Forestville: Improved tax hike a disgrace

Former OBSERVER columnist Paul Christopher called it from the start. When news broke that the village of Forestville might be raising taxes 445 percent, Christopher – in a blog – stated the 445 percent was just a trick so that when the final number came in lower, it would not look so bad.

Bingo.

A village in Chautauqua County is raising taxes 112 percent and that is being considered a victory? That is how out of touch residents here have become with paying taxes.

Instead of being irate, we have a mentality that those tax rates could have been worse.

Trust us, a 112 percent tax increase is a disgrace. It can no longer be excused and must not be accepted.

Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan wants to turn the economy around. No economy will turn around when municipalities are allowed to exist that cannot manage money.

Forestville, unfortunately, might just be the tip of the iceberg.
