3 percent budget hike proposed in Gowanda

GOWANDA – Resi-dents in the Gowanda School District are facing a proposed 2.99 budget increase for the 2014-2015 school year. The increase will equal to a $820,233 in the budget.

The district is proposing a tax levy of 1.46 percent, which is under the 2 percent tax cap. The estimated tax increase for a $100,000 home with a basic STAR exemption will be $15.11. As part of the proposed $28,208,720 budget, the district is proposing staff reductions. The Gowanda Board of Education is proposing to reduce two full-time teachers in the elementary school due to declining enrollment which will affect grades 4 and 5; one full-time Seneca language teacher with no loss of program; and one full-time teaching assistant due to Individualized Educational Program requirements of current and graduating students.

Also on the ballot this year will be the purchase of two full-size buses from reserves accounts and three open seats on the board of education. Running for those three vacant seats are Joseph DeCarlo, Mary Stratton, Peter Delpriore and Mark Nephew.

The board of education will host a budget hearing on May 7 at 6 p.m., in the middle school cafeteria with the budget vote on Tuesday, May 20.

The board also accepted the resignation of Barbara Stanton as a substitute teacher and substitute teaching assistant.
