OBSERVER?Staff Report

BROCTON – The Brocton Bulldogs (4-6, 2-4) made two mistakes more than Westfield (10-4, 7-0) and it ended up costing them a 3-1 decision to the Wolverines on Thursday in CCAA West II high school baseball.

“We played them very tough the first time and that was our first game,” Brocton coach Terry Presto said. “That was 3-0. What’s nice is Steve Krystofiak pitched well enough to win. I was really impressed and it was a positive sign to see we have another hurler to go along with Ryan Johnson.”

Krystofiak pitched all seven innings and scattered nine hits while striking out 12 and walking four. His counterpart, Rob Burgess, was just as effective as he allowed just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs got on the board first as Johnson ripped an RBI single to score Connor Doltz.

Westfield responded in the top of the fourth as Greg Schroder scored an unearned run.

In the sixth inning, Brandon Johnston was hit by a pitch with two outs. He stole second and scored on a single by Tanner Dahl.

The Wolverines put the game away in the seventh inning as Burgess led off with a single. Following consecutive strikeouts, Burgess stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball to round out the scoring.

Johnston finished with two hits for the winners.

For Brocton, Johnson had two hits of his own in a losing cause.

Brocton returns to action Monday at Cassadaga Valley.
