Gowanda elementary principal to retire

GOWANDA – One more familiar face will be missing from Gowanda Central School next school year. It was announced Elementary Principal Janice Stokes will be retiring effective Aug. 15.

It was announced at a recent Gowanda Board of Education that Stokes was retiring. The board accepted the resignation with regret with Superintendent Charles Rinaldi calling the retirement “bittersweet.” Stokes has been at Gowanda for more than two decades, starting in her current position in 1991.

“Mrs. Stokes has given her time, energy, love and dedication to her students, families and staff in Gowanda Elementary School for 22 years,” Rinaldi said.

Stokes thanked the board of education for their support. She previously worked at Fredonia Catholic School and St. Aloysius School in Springville. During her tenure at Gowanda, Rinaldi said Stokes has touched thousands of students’ lives.

“If you do the math, she has positively impacted approximately 3,000 individual children during that time span. She is a friend to many and an educator to all. We will miss her and want to wish her the best on her pending retirement,” Rinaldi said.
