Billies opportunistic in win over Knights
Fredonia (8-2, 5-0) capitalized on six Silver Creek errors Friday en route to a 9-6 win in CCAA West I baseball action at the Chestnut Street Field.
Noah Voss picked up the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out two. Weston Ley started the game and worked the first two innings. He struck out three and walked two before giving way to Tyler DiRusso, who allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits. Jared Burmaster finished the game, picking up a two-inning save while striking out five and walking one.
“Silver Creek really battled,” Fredonia head coach Vince Gullo said. “They never gave up. I’m very happy with Jared (Burmaster) coming in and shutting the door in the last two innings. We really needed that.”
Fredonia jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings, as Cam Voss chased home Ley with a double in the first while Lucas Voss plated one of the two runs the Hillbillies scored in the second inning.
In the top of the third, the Black Knights were able to tie the game on an RBI groundout off the bat of Jake Nosbisch, a run-scoring single off the bat of Adam Klajbor and an RBI double by Tim Manning.
But the tie was short-lived however, as Fredonia took advantage of a couple Silver Creek errors and an RBI single by Mike Pucci to take a 7-3 lead they would not relinquish.
The Black Knights cut the Hillbillies’ lead to 7-6 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Brad Rybak and two unearned runs, but Fredonia answered in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs. Matt Sheridan scored Lucas Voss with a single and Cam Voss drove in Ley on a sacrifice fly for the final runs of the game.
Ley and Cam Voss (double) finished with two hits each while Ley had an RBI and scored two runs and Cam Voss had two RBIs and a run scored. Manning chipped in a pair of hits, including a double, for the Black Knights.
Jeff VanVlack was the losing pitcher, allowing nine runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.
