Dunkirk fends off fiesty Silver Creek, 14-9
SILVER CREEK – The Dunkirk Lady Marauders (5-5) held off a fiesty Silver Creek squad in a 14-9 victory Tuesday in CCAA West I high school softball action.
The Black Knights held a 9-6 lead after the fifth inning, but the Lady Marauders responded with a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run double with the bases loaded by Quinn Bankoski to tie the game. Selena Ruiz then scored the go-ahead run on an RBI from Sarah Hanlon.
Dunkirk scored three more runs in the seventh off a three-run shot from Maddie Crandall.
“Those were security runs we definitely needed,” Dunkirk coach John Sliwa said. “Give Silver Creek lots of credit. My girls underestimated them. Give them credit for battling back and hitting the ball well in third and fourth innings. Commend (Silver Creek coach) Stacey Bauer for her team battling. They had us. They kept hitting the ball and did not give up. Our girls were resilient. We put ourselves in a position we shouldn’t be in and I’m glad we came back.”
Crandall also had two singles. Riley Drummond had two hits with a double and three RBIs while Bankoski had two doubles in the win. Hanlon drove in two runs on two hits.
Silver Creek’s offense was led by Christina Williams, who had two hits with a double. Jenny Pearl had two singles in defeat.
Dunkirk travels to Jamestown today.
