Szumigala keys Lady Hornets’ 3-2 win over Lady Panthers

FORESTVILLE – Down to Forestville’s final out with two strikes on Alisha Szumigala in the bottom of the seventh inning, the senior cracked an RBI single to score Julia Szoszorek and give the Lady Hornets (5-3. 4-2) a 3-2 victory over Pine Valley on Wednesday in CCAA East II high school softball.

It capped off an impressive day for Szumigala, who was also the winning pitcher. In the circle, she struck out 14, did not issue a walk and scattered just five base hits.

It was a rematch of last year’s Section 6 Class D championship game, in which Pine Valley won in extra innings.

On Wednesday, Forestville got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Szumigala scored on a passed ball. The Lady Hornets increased the lead, 2-0, as Katie Thompson had an RBI single to score Olivia Burger.

The Lady Panthers got on the board in the fifth as Jessica Pillard led off with a single. Later in the inning, with two runners aboard, Kayla Mansfield reached on an error and both runners scored.

That set up Szumigala’s second double of the game for the winning hit.

“It was a great game,” Forestville coach Brianne Hazelton said. “Pine Valley is always a tough team. They have great hitters. It was nice to have a rematch and come away with a victory.”

Jessica Wilcox was the losing pitcher as she fanned eight while walking five and giving up just three hits.
