One bad inning

SINCLAIRVILLE – The Panama Lady Panthers (5-4) scored nine runs in the third inning to ease past the Cassadaga Valley Lady Cougars (2-4), 11-6, Thursday in CCAA West II high school softball.

“It was single after single, some walks – a little bit of everything went wrong that inning,” Cassadaga Valley coach Ken Balling said.

The Lady Cougars battled back to make the score 9-6, but the Lady Panthers scored two more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Carly Abate was the winning pitcher as she gave up eight hits and struck out five while walking two and hitting two batters.

Panama’s top hitter was Taylor Bowen with three hits. Sarah Osborne and Brittney Lehart each had two hits.

Alicia Guichard led Cassadaga Valley with three hits while Brooke Johnson and Rebecca Rothleader each had two hits in defeat.

Cassadaga Valley hosts Clymer today.

Brocton 1

BROCTON – Ashton Albanesius was nearly unhittable Thursday in leading the Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds (11-5, 7-1) to a 10-1 victory over the Brocton Lady Bulldogs (5-6, 4-5) in CCAA West II high school softball.

Albanesius struck out eight and walked one while giving up just two hits.

Offensively, Jade Walsh had three hits and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Mel McCutcheon had three hits with a triple and drove in three runs.

The Lady Thunderbirds had a four-run fifth inning highlighted by a two-run triple from McCutcheon.

Morgan Bennett had Brocton’s only two hits.

Jess Merle was the losing pitcher as she struck out 10, walked three and gave up 11 hits.
