Money will be used to rehabilitate 12 homes in village

BROCTON – April’s showers may be late getting here, but homeowners in the village of Brocton will have a grant award raining down home improvement funds on them following a signature from their mayor.

During this week’s board of trustees meeting, Mayor Dave Hazelton was authorized to provide his signature to the acceptance of a Community Development Block Grant award from the Housing Trust Fund Corporation and the New York State Office of Community Renewal in the amount of $400,000.

Brocton’s award is part of the NYS CDBG 2013 competitive housing round which seeks to award more than $23 million across New York state to assist homeowners with affordable housing needs.

The grant application was submitted by CHRIC on behalf of the village, and Brocton was officially announced as the local winner by Eileen Powers, director for housing rehabilitation at CHRIC and Josh Freifeld, executive director. Both were on hand at the board meeting to congratulate the village.

“This is an incredibly competitive program, and we want to congratulate you on receiving this award, which will help homeowners,” stated Powers.

Mayor Hazelton noted that funds from this grant award cannot be used on any Main Street projects, which the village currently has need of.

Freifeld however, added, “We’re excited to be in Brocton and finding funding for Main Street is our next goal.”

CHRIC was able to help secure a sizeable grant award that allowed Brocton to restore and refurbish its four corner arch and is currently seeking Main Street grant opportunities that would allow Brocton to tackle dilapidated buildings such as 10 E. Main St. in the village.

Applications and home inspections were performed before the CDBG grant application was submitted to determine the most needed properties through the village. The goal, according to the mayor’s office, will be rehabilitate 12 homes in Brocton at approximately $33,000 per home.

CHRIC representatives will begin the legwork of assigning rehabilitation work based on a point system and preparing the necessary paperwork to get the project in forward motion on behalf of the village.
