Hillbillies pound out 20 hits in win over Williamsville East

WILLIAMSVILLE – Fredonia (13-2) pounded out 20 hits en route to a 21-4 win over Williamsville East, on Saturday, during non-league baseball action.

“All in all, it was a good afternoon,” Fredonia coach Vince Gullo said. “Williamsville East was a little low on pitching and we capitalized.”

The Hillbillies struck for five runs in the top of the first inning, including a two-run double by Cam Voss and a run-scoring single off the bat of Michael Pucci.

Fredonia added three more runs in the top of the second on RBI singles from Cody Smith and Matt Sheridan while Weston Ley chipped in an RBI double.

Sheridan added an RBI single in the third to give Fredonia a 9-2 lead while Smith’s run-scoring double in the fifth put Fredonia up 10-2.

Then, in the top of the seventh, the Hillbillies exploded for 11 runs, as Ley added a two-run double, Pucci had a two-run triple and Sal Flores, Noah Voss and Smith all had run-scoring singles.

Noah Voss picked up the win on the mound after tossing four innings in relief of starter Jared Burmaster, who went the first two innings and surrendered two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking one. Noah Voss finished allowing a run on three hits while striking out two. Ley pitched the seventh and allowed an unearned run.

“I was happy with our approach,” Gullo said. “And our defense and our three pitchers did a nice job.”

Fredonia is back in action on Tuesday at Silver Creek. With a win, the Hillbillies will claim sole possession of the CCAA West I title. They claimed at least a share of the title with their 9-1 win over Southwestern on Friday.
