Lots of rules, few volunteers

When there are too many municipalities, that usually means there are far too many rules – and differing rules for each entity that you enter.

Each entity, we must add, needs to then have its own Planning Board, Zoning Board and whatever other board to maintain these rules. One of the biggest problems, however, is finding volunteers in these communities to take these positions.

In Brocton, two Zoning Board of Appeals positions are open. In recent history, filling these posts in the village has been a problem – and judging by the recent listing in the community notebook on Monday it still is.

Which leads us to wonder: would the village of Brocton and town of Portland be better served with one zoning board? Or how about one county zoning board?

Nah. That probably would make too much sense.
