Boater dies after boat capsizes in Chautauqua Lake
ELLERY – A Pennsyl-vania man lost his life after a boat accident on Friday.
New York State Police in Jamestown investigated a fatal boating incident in Chautauqua Lake.
Investigation revealed that at 3:50 p.m. two subjects were fishing 200 yards offshore on Chautauqua Lake in a 14-foot 1961 Crestliner boat with an outboard motor. Weather conditions began to deteriorate. The boat was anchored and began taking on water, becoming unstable. High winds and rough waters caused the boat to capsize, ejecting both subjects into the water.
Passing boaters found the two men – both wearing life vests – near the sunken boat and pulled them from the water. They were brought to Bemus Point Rescue.
Robert W. Knell, 66, of Duke Center, Pa., was unresponsive and transported to WCA Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Saturday, due to cardiac pulmonary arrest.
Roy L. Barclay, 65, of Derrick City, Pa., was taken to WCA Hospital where he was treated for exposure to the cold water and released.
New York State Police were assisted by the Chau-tauqua County Sheriff’s Department Water Rescue Team in recovering the overturned boat.
Dunkirk man found allegedly slumped over wheel charged
CHAUTAUQUA – A Dunkirk man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after being found allegedly slumped over his steering wheel.
According to the Chau-tauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Kevin M. O’Brien, 54, was charged with consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated Monday.
Deputies responded to Route 394 for a vehicle on the side of the road. Police found O’Brien to be allegedly intoxicated.
A record check showed O’Brien had been convicted of driving while ability impaired by drugs within the past 10 years, making this charge a felony. He was released to appear in Chautauqua Town Court.
New York State Police at Fredonia
SHERIDAN – On Monday, Fredonia State Police stopped a vehicle on State Route 20 for speeding in zone. The operator, Alyssa Joy, 40, from South Wales, was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. Joy was transported to Fredonia State Police for processing. She was issued UTT’s to appear in Town of Sheridan Court.
On Monday, Fredonia State Police stopped a vehicle on Temple Road in the Town of Dunkirk for crossing over the center line.
Gualberto Dejesus Rodriguez, 32, of Fredonia failed standard field sobriety tests and was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
He was transported to Fredonia State Police for processing. He was issued UTT’s for driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operator, crossing the center line, and open container. He is to appear in the Town of Dunkirk Court on June 9.

POLAND – A Kennedy man has been charged following an investigation into debris cleanup on Route 62.
According to the Chau-tauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Jordan P. Ricotta, 20, was charged with driving while intoxicated on Sunday.
Shortly before 3 a.m., deputies noticed several individuals cleaning debris from the roadway on Route 62. While police were investigating this situation, Ricotta allegedly pulled up to the scene and was found to be intoxicated.
He was released on appearance tickets for Poland Town Court.
Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office
PORTLAND – Dwayne E. Bobik, 47, of Silver Creek was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to take a breath test and speeding on Saturday.
Just before 9 p.m., deputies observed Bobik’s vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 5. Bobik was found to be allegedly intoxicated. He was released to appear in Portland Town Court at a later date.
