Plant sale to benefit Literacy Volunteers to be held this Saturday and Sunday
The Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club will meet today at 4 p.m. to prepare for its 6th annual plant sale, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale benefits Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County.
Today’s meeting will take place at Deakin’s Barn on Route 20 in Portland so the members can set up all the plants and arrangements. Since there are so many perennials, annuals, herbs, and vegetables, it takes the cooperation of the whole club to get everything organized.
The meeting will also include a seminar about all the types of perennials offered for sale. Plants will be labeled and information will be shared about the best growing conditions for each plant. Several members will bring perennials from their own gardens for the the freebie table.
The main order of business will be planning how to make the sale run as smoothly as possible. Since the inception of this benefit plant sale, the community has been extremely supportive. Each year the number of customers continues to grow as the word is spread about the variety, quality and reasonable prices of the plants that are sold.
Several committees work to help with the organization of the plant sale. Penny Deakin is in charge of all the planting of seeds and transplanting of seedlings while Judy Kawski is in charge of labeling, arranging and organizing the plants for the sale. Janet Arnold’s committee takes care of sales while Phyllis Steinberg’s committee coordinates publicity. Judy Wilcox, president of the club, has worked hard to keep everyone informed of meetings and the importance of each member’s role in the preparation and actual plant sale.
In addition, many people outside the Bud ‘n Bloom club have contributed in various ways to help make this benefit plant sale as successful as possible. Special thanks go to Kristen Britz for designing the fliers and to the following local nurseries for their generous donations of beautiful shrubs for our special raffle: Turnbulls, Westfield Nursery, M & R, Glen Acres and Mike’s Nursery.
After all the plants and donated shrubs are in their proper places and ready for the plant sale, the members will be able to relax and sit down together to enjoy a potluck supper.
