Rain leaves Cougars, Wolverines tied 2-all in seventh
WESTFIELD – Cassadaga Valley’s Jaquan Watts and Westfield’s Nolan Hunt were locked in a 2-2 pitchers’ duel in the seventh inning before lightning suspended the CCAA West II baseball game between the Cougars and Wolverines.
The game was moved to Westfield due to poor field conditions at Cassadaga Valley.
Watts allowed two runs on three hits while striking out nine and walking seven. Meanwhile, Hunt allowed his two runs – one earned – on three hits while striking out nine and walking two.
The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the top of the first after Brandon Johnston led off the frame with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tanner Dahl.
Hunt shut the Cougars down for the first three innings, but they broke through in the bottom of the fourth after Matt Heath reached on a one-out single and moved to second after Matt Hallowell walked. Heath then stole third and scored on a ground ball off the bat of Tyson Gugino. The Cougars’ second run came on the same play after a throwing error allowed Hallowell to score.
Watts worked a scoreless fifth inning after working in and out of trouble. He struck out the first two batters, before Jonathan Wilson walked and Dahl reached on an error. A walk to Robbie Burgess loaded the bases for Hunt, who struck out looking to end the inning.
With the bad weather rolling in, Joe Quagliana led off the top of the sixth with a long home run to left field that tied the game 2-all. Then, in the top of the seventh, Dahl walked, but lightning in the area suspended the game with a runner on first and Dahl at the plate.
Cassadaga Valley’s three hits came from Watts, who singled with one out in the first, Jordan Crabtree, who singled with one out in the fourth and Heath, who singled in the fourth with two outs. For Westfield, Johnston singled in the first, Hunt singled with two outs in the first and Quagliana homered to lead off the sixth.
The game will be picked up where it left off at a time and date to be determined.
