Defending champs shine at County meet

LAKEWOOD – The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Tennis Championships were played out on Friday afternoon at the Lakewood YMCA and both singles and doubles saw repeat performances from their defending champions.

After claiming last year’s CCAA singles title, Matt Johnson of Southwestern became the champion for a second time after dropping his teammate, Quinn White, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals and then cruising past Falconer’s Cooper Miller, 6-1, 6-3, in the championship match.

Also repeating was the doubles tandem from Panama of Bryce and Jack Payne.

After topping the Fredonia Hillbillies team of Nick Johnston and Jake Thompson, 6-1, 6-2, in the semis, Payne and Payne repeated their championship win with a 6-2, 6-1 match against Jake Volz and Geoffrey Broadbent of Olean.

After falling to Johnson in the semifinals, White took home the singles consolation match over Olean’s Zhi Wang, 6-4, 6-3.
