Lady Hillbillies drop Frewsburg, 9-2

FREWSBURG – Up 4-0, Tess Schober and Lea Richir had two-run singles in the top of the fifth to put the game away, as Fredonia eased past Frewsburg, 9-2, on Sunday during CCAA West I softball action.

Mekenna Leid went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs while Alicia Deering added two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for the Lady Hillbillies, who improved to 16-1 overall, and 13-1 in CCAA West I play.

Fredonia scored a run in the first on a Bre Dahn RBI single and two more in the second on a run-scoring single off the bat of Leid and another by Cassie Essek, who finished the day 2 for 2.

Then, in the fourth, Leid drove in Hannah Cybart on a two-out single, to put the Lady Hillbillies up 4-0. Deering’s triple in the top of the seventh chased home Leid with the Lady Hillbillies’ final run of the game.

Baylee Tarnowski picked up the win in the circle for Fredonia after she tossed five innings, allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out six.

“Baylee pitched a good game,” Fredonia assistant coach Bob Sievert said. “She pitched five solid innings, but we’ve got some work to do yet.”

Lauren Milson pitched the last two innings and allowed a run on two hits while striking out two and walking as many.

Kaitlyn Blanchard suffered the loss in the circle for the Bears, as she went four innings – the first two and the last two – and allowed four runs on nine hits. She struck out one and did not issue a walk.

Unless the Lady Hillbillies can find an opponent to play a non-league game, they will have to wait to play again until the Section 6 playoffs begin some time within the next 10 days.

“We’re trying to get a game in next w eek,” Sievert said. “We’d like to play a game maybe Monday or Tuesday.”
