Cam Voss, Ley lead Hillbillies past Bears, 13-0
FREWSBURG – Cam Voss turned in another stellar performance and the Fredonia (15-3, 11-0) offense scored 13 runs on 11 hits, as the Hillbillies cruised past CCAA West I baseball foe Frewsburg, 13-0, on Sunday.
Cam Voss allowed three singles while striking out 10 and walking one in a complete-game effort. The junior lefty is now 7-0 on the season with four shutouts.
“Cam did a great job throwing strikes,” Fredonia head coach Vince Gullo said. “He got ahead of every batter he faced and our defense played phenomenal behind him. I like what I’m seeing heading into playoffs.”
After a scoreless first inning, the Hillbillies got on the board in the top of the second as Jared Burmaster stroked a 2-run single and Lucas Voss chipped in an RBI on a ground out.
“We did a nice job in the Jamestown game on Friday,” Gullo said of the at-bats his team had against quality pitching. “We hadn’t really seen that quality of pitching this season. (On Sunday) it took us a while to get going, but it was nice to see us have good, quality at-bats.”
Bears’ starter Tage Johnson, who finished allowing 13 runs on 11 hits while striking out nine and walking one, held the Hillbillies off the scoreboard in the third, but Fredonia added four runs in the top of the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the seventh for the 13-0 final.
In the fourth, Cam Voss helped himself with a two-run double while Cody Smith added a run-scoring single. Vince Gullo singled, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch for the Hillbillies’ run in the fifth while adding an RBI double in the seventh. Also in the final frame, Lucas Voss drove in another run on a ground out, Weston Ley had a two-run triple and Burmaster drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
“Weston started a little slow (Sunday),” Gullo said. “And then he ends up getting two or three hits every game. We rely on him to get our offense going and he’s been coming through for us all year.”
Ley finished with three hits, including the 2-run triple, while also scoring two runs. Burmaster added a pair of hits and three RBIs while Gullo finished with two hits (double), an RBI and three runs scored.
For Frewsburg, Trevor Spicer, Bryce Peterson and Kole Brink all singled in the loss.
The Hillbillies are back in action today when they travel to Bemus Point to complete a suspended game with the Maple Grove Red Dragons. Fredonia leads Maple Grove 5-0 in the bottom of the second.
