Annual Hollywood Happening to kickoff Friday
GOWANDA – West Main Street will be full of motorcycles this weekend. The annual Hollywood Happening will kickoff Friday and run through Sunday.
Dr. Dana Anderson, chair of the Hollywood Happening committee, said this year’s event “is expected to be the best yet.” Events throughout the weekend include a Ride-In Bike Show on Sunday, the Wicked Glen tattoo contest and the AMVET’s Hollywood Theater Charity Run.
The event will kickoff on Friday, May 30 with a bike parade from Gowanda Harley-Davidson to downtown. The parade will leave Gowanda Harley-Davidson at 7 p.m., with opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. Parade lineup will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Gowanda Zoar Road. Traffic on West Main Street will be closed on Friday starting at 5 p.m.
New this year will be the Eastern Action Sports team, which will perform three times on Saturday and Sunday on Center Street. The Eastern Action Sports team is a BMX show compared to motocross last year. The Magical John Show will perform Saturday and Sunday at the Hollywood Theater.
“It’s actually pretty cool. (The magic show) is going to be under the scaffolding we have set up for theater restoration right now,” Tim McKeever, marketing consultant to the event, said.
Another new feature at this year’s event will be a wine giveaway.
The event has teamed up with Kix Country and Willow Creek Winery for western New York’s largest wine giveaway. The 100 wine bottle giveaway will be spontaneous and at random times throughout the weekend. McKeever said people can “like” Hollywood Happening on Facebook for more information on the giveaway.
“All weekend long we’re just giving away wine. Every night we’re also giving away a set of motorcycle tires,” McKeever said.
Tickets for the tire raffle, sponsored by Dunlop, are $5 each and can be purchased from event staff or at the Hollywood Hut throughout the weekend. A 2014 Harley-Davidson Super Glide Custom motorcycle will also be given away. Tickets for the motorcycle raffle will be available at the event.
Music entertainment at the beer garden will include Dive House Union, Turbulance, BarKing Spiders, Chris Maloney, Everett Lee and the Underground Stampede and Wanted, the Bon Jovi Tribute Band. Family seating is available for all performances.
With the flash flood of May 13, McKeever said the rain did not dampen the event’s plans. He said as long as the weather is good, the event will be a great weekend to attend.
“We got the flood out of the way, we got the crazy rain out of the rain. As long as the weather stays good, it’s going to be a really, really successful event,” he said.
Bike parking is available on West Main Street. For vehicles, they can park in the village municipal lots or at the American Legion. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.gowandahollywoodhappening.com. Camping is also available throughout the weekend.
All proceeds from the Hollywood Happening, sponsored in large part by the Gernatt Family of Companies, Wolf’s Run, Gowanda Harley-Davidson and Native Pride, will benefit the restoration of the Hollywood Theater. Tours of the theater will be given daily.
“If you have never been to the Happening before, we want to encourage you, your friends and family to pick a day to come out and enjoy the festival. We literally shut down Main Street so you can check out thousands of bikes, visit our shops … enjoy the sales, take a tour of the theater and see all that Gowanda and the Happening has to offer,” Hollywood Theater President Mark Burr said.
