Gowanda battles til end in loss to top-seeded Depew
DEPEW – No. 1 Depew opened up a 4-3 game with a five-run bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday, as the Lady Wildcats cruised to a 9-3 win over No. 9 Gowanda (12-4) during Section 6 Class B softball quarterfinal action.
“I’m very proud of them,” Gowanda head coach Darlene Pfaffenbach said of her team. “We came out and we were very aggressive. We came back and I don’t think (Depew) thought we were going to come out as aggressive as we did.”
The Lady Panthers scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI double off the bat of Tia Thompson and added their other two runs in the top of the sixth on consecutive doubles by Da:’di’ Jones, Taylor Olson and Melissa Farley.
Olson suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on 12 hits while striking out five and walking one over four innings of work in relief of Jones.
“Jones throws softer (than Olson),” Pfaffenbach said. “Her changeup and her drop ball were a little slower and we were trying to throw (Depew) off. We were going to throw her a couple of innings and take her out.”
Once they did, Depew was able to mount its come back, as the Lady Wildcats scored single runs in the second and third, two in the fourth and five in the sixth to put the game away.
“They bunted the ball very well,” Pfaffenbach said of Depew. “They bunted the ball nine times and in the (sixth) inning, they kept laying down squeeze bunts and we bobbled them and we just didn’t make the plays we needed to make.”
Farley and Thompson each had two hits, including doubles, and an RBI while Olson singled and walked in the loss.
