Gowanda bus accident injures student

PERRYSBURG – A Gowanda Central student was reportedly injured in an accident involving a school bus and a farm tractor Thursday morning. The 17-year-old female was transported to Lake Shore Hospital for minor injuries.

The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m., on Mosher Road. According to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, the bus driven by Ronald L. Warrior, 67, of Brant was traveling north just south of Route 39 when it encountered a large tractor operated by Nelson Nobles, 48, of South Dayton. Ten children were on the bus at the time of the accident and no other injuries were reported.

“I am relieved to report that everyone is OK, although one student was transported to the hospital for observation. Everyone was checked at the scene by EMTs and either released into their parent’s care or transported to school on a different bus,” Gowanda Superintendent Charles Rinaldi said in a statement.

According to Rinaldi, the preliminary investigation shows both vehicles crested a hill at the same time. The bus driver attempted to take evasive action but the bus did receive damage on the driver’s side extending from the front to the rear wheel well.

“We want to thank our local emergency responders, Cattaraugus County Sheriffs and New York State Police for their prompt response and service,” Rinaldi said.

Gowanda Fire Department assisted at the scene. At this time, no charges have been filed, but the accident does remain under investigation.
