Fredonia Place leads the way in veterans benefits for residents
Fredonia Place was the first senior living community in Chautauqua County to secure Veterans Administration assistance for its residents who served their country. This summer marks the ninth anniversary that Fredonia Place residents have been taking advantage of the V.A. Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit.
All wartime residents and their spouses are eligible for this benefit. The veteran must have served in the military during a declared wartime period: World War II, Korea and Vietnam; and Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. They did not have to serve in a combat zone, but need 90 days of wartime military service to qualify. The maximum monthly benefits are: $1,130 for a surviving spouse, $1,758 for a wartime veteran, $2,085 for a qualifying couple and $1,380 for a veteran whose spouse requires care. This benefit comes in the form of a check to the resident, not to the community.
There is no maximum benefit over your lifetime, and you can keep up to $80,000 in net assets (your home and vehicle are excluded) and still qualify for this V.A. pension. As long as the individual is a resident, he or she will continue to receive a monthly check. Even if the resident lived in another state and moved to a New York community, he or she can contact their local V.A. representative to obtain this benefit. It is calculated based on monthly cash flow, minus health care expenses (including your monthly rent at Fredonia Place). All benefits awarded under this program are retroactive to the date of application and are increased annually by the V.A. based on any cost-of-living increases.
