Darwin Barker Library hosts open house

An open house on Saturday acted as a send-off as well as a welcome for employees at the Darwin R. Barker Library. Friends of the Barker Library held an open house for the community to honor two employees retiring and to welcome two new faces.

Library Director Joy Harper and Children’s Room Director Kathy Petersen recently retired from the library. The open house was to honor their dedication to the library for a combined total of 42 years. The open house also welcomed Sara Hart, incoming library director, and Carey Caserta, incoming children’s librarian. Hart will be a new addition to the library while Caserta has already been working at the library.

The Friends of the Barker Library also donated a new addition to the children’s room – the library’s new mascot, Barker.

The stuffed Golden Retriever will make his home in the children’s room and serve as company for children while they read or even make an appearance during story hour. President of the organization Janeil Rey explained a Golden Retriever was chosen because Harper always had that breed of dog. A monetary donation was also given to the library in honor of both Harper and Petersen.

“The library is really the heart of this community and it’s really the librarians that make (the library) what it is,” Rey said.

Friends of the Barker Library currently has 90 members and membership materials are available at the library. In addition to Rey, other board members include Marcia Drayo, Judy Elwinger, Carol Boltz, Ann Murphy, Barbara Barnes and Karin Lewis. The board expressed their gratitude for the entire library staff “for their efforts to keep Barker Library a friendly and invited place to visit.”

The open house also announced summer reading programs. Bookaroos for children in grades pre-K to 2 will meet on Mondays or Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., starting July 7. Book Explorers for children in grades 3-6 will meet on Wednesdays starting July 9 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information or to register, visit www.barkerlibrary.org or call 672-8051. Story time is also held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:15 a.m.
