Donald C. Skellie Sr.

MAYVILLE Donald C. Skellie Sr., 72, of Mayville, passed away at Hamot Hospital in Erie, PA on Saturday (May 31, 2014), after a lengthy illness.

He was born on May 19, 1942 in Mina, NY the son of the late Edward and Frances Kinney Skellie.

Don was a veteran of the US Navy in the Seabees during the Vietnam era, receiving the National Defense Medal, Cold War Victory Medal, State of New York Medal of Merit, State of New York Conspicuous Star, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He had owned and operated a dairy farm in Mina for several years, and he had worked at MRC which is currently SKF as a millwright, retiring in 2012.

Don was a member of the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post 8647 VFW in May-ville where he currently was the Commander of the Post. He had also served as post commander prior for a total of 10 years. He was also a member of the Westfield Moose Lodge #118. Don had also been the chairman for the VFW Golf Tournament to benefit the Food Pantry in Mayville for the last 15 years.

He enjoyed fishing with his son Don Jr.; he also enjoyed gardening, carpentry, and golfing.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie Warner Skellie whom he married October 1, 1966 in Harborcreek, PA; three children, Greg Skellie (Penny) of Portland, Kimberly Skellie of Mayville, and Donald (Kristie) Skellie Jr. of Fredonia; four grandchildren, Lauren, Karlie, Abbey, and Trinidy; two sisters, Judy Barringer of Celoron, and Carol Torrence of Ripley; two sisters-in-law, Sally Skellie of Mayville, and Bert Warner of Erie, PA; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Ronald Skellie on August 7, 2013.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (June 7, 2014) in the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. Pastor William Nicholson will officiate. The Lake Chautauqua Memorial VFW Post will conduct full Military Honors. Immediately following the funeral everybody is invited to join the family at the VFW in Mayville for a celebration of Don’s life.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
