Special Olympians and coaches

Pictured are several of the athletes and coaches from Chautauqua County who traveled to Buffalo to take part in the Special Olympics New York State Games, held June 6-8 at University at Buffalo. Athletes from BOCES LoGuidice and Hewes Centers, and various community agencies participated, including competitors from Brocton, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Cassadaga, Jamestown and Frewsburg. The games involved 2,000 athletes from across the state. In addition to the competitions, the N.Y. State Games included an opening and closing ceremony, as well as a Victory Dance on Saturday night. The athletes and their sport from the LoGuidice Center were; Bowling: Dylan Murphy, Devin Bush, Jason Stevens and Hunter Evans; Track and Field: Veronica Benson, Franklin Blum, Christian Kahubka, Alicia Miles, Raymond Rosten and Johnathan Sheldon; Swimming: Tyler Gernatt, Erika Gernatt, Bobbie Jo Ostrom, Sierra Couchman and TJ McDonnell. Coaches included Mary Carlson, Brian Brink, Maureen Bialaszewski and Susie Hertlein. Hertlein, BOCES Adaptive Physical Education teacher, commented, “It’s a really good social experience for our kids. They stay in UB dorms and eat in the UB cafeteria. It gives them the experience of campus life.”
