Humane Society gets grant for pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has received a grant from PetSmart Charities to spay/neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant also includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dunkirk, Fredonia and Jamestown can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until Sunday.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call 665-2209 ext. 205. Time and funds are limited, so those wishing to take advantage of the grant funds should schedule as soon as possible.

communitywide yard sale Saturday

The annual communitywide yard sale will be held Saturday, rain or shine. Maps are available at the Perrysburg Town Hall, 10460 Peck Hill Road. To have your sale place on the map or for questions, call 532-4090.

Farmers’ market in South Dayton

Starting Saturday, the Village of South Dayton will sponsor a Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon on the Village Square.

Chairperson is Village Trustee Kristen Griffin, other members are Jodi Oakes of Oakes Traveling Mercantile and Karen Strickland. There is no charge to participate. To register call Karen at 988-5076.

Father’s Day chicken barbecue in Dayton

There will be a Father’s Day Chicken Barbecue Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to sold out at the Dayton Volunteer Fire Company’s Fire Hall, 9512 Route 62, Dayton. The menu will be 1/2 chicken, salt potatoes, macaroni salad, cole slaw, homemade desserts and drink with eat-in dinners. The cost is adults: $9, children: $5.50. Takeouts will be available. To reserve takeouts, call 532 -9098 before Sunday. On Sunday, call 532-2627. All proceeds go toward the purchase of an emergency generator for the fire hall.

Child’s Safety Seat Check and Kids’ Safe ID Saturday

in Gowanda

A free Child’s Safety Seat Check & Kids’ Safe ID will be held by the Cattaraugus Sheriff’s Department Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gowanda Fire Hall, 230 Aldrich St., Gowanda. Parents or guardians must accompany the children for the Kids’ Safe ID.

This service is co-sponsored by the Gowanda Fire Department and Valley Pharmacy & Medical Supplies.

Refreshments will be provided by the Gowanda Fire Department.

Cassadaga village

lawn sales Saturday

For more than 30 years, the annual Cassadaga village lawn sales have been held on all the streets in the village. This year’s sale will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to walk around the village for the sales. The event will be held rain or shine.

Support group starts on Tuesday

The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders will offer support group meetings for stroke and head injury survivors and family members. The group will meet twice during the summer in room E 148 Thompson Hall on the campus of SUNY Fredonia. The dates are Tuesday and July 15 at 3 p.m.

A typical group meeting will include activities to help stroke/head injury survivors use compensatory strategies to improve communication skills, provide educational information, and an opportunity to socialize and share experiences. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Youngerman Center recognizes that there are individuals in the community whose insurance benefit for therapy has been exhausted but their hopes for improvement have not. Please contact Julie Williams, Coordinator 673-4618 for more information about attending the group.

DEC to close Dunkirk fishing platform

The New York State Department of Environ-mental Conservation will be closing the Dunkirk fishing platform June 16-20 for repairs. It will be closed to the public during that time.

Camp Gross signups begin Monday

The Dunkirk Youth Bureau has announced that Summer Better Than Others Day Camp at Camp Gross signups will begin Monday. City residents will be allowed to sign up their children ages 5-11 (5-year-olds must be graduates of kindergarten) beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the Youth and Recreation Office, 338 Central Ave., Suite 210. Non-residents can sign-up June 23 at 12:30 p.m.

Summer Better Than Others Day Camp will begin July 7 and run through the week of Aug. 4-8. Fees will remain the same, $40 for city residents and $50 for non-city attendees. Literacy Volunteers book sale on Saturday

Literacy Volunteers will hold a book sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 21 East Bookstore, located at 21 E. Second St., Washington Ave. entrance, Dunkirk. Paperbacks will be available for $.50, hardcovers $1, children’s books $.25 as well as some specially priced books. Patrons are invited to browse, take home some bargains, and assist in the work of promoting literacy.

American Legion Post Hanover Memorial Post 148 announces activities planned for Flag Day Saturday at the Silver Creek VFW Post 6472, 13 N. Main St., Silver Creek.

A flag retirement (burning) will be held at the Silver Creek VFW Post at 2 p.m. The public is asked to please retire their flags properly by taking them to a Military Post (club).

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 922 of Dunkirk will be holding its annual Flag Day Ceremony Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse, 1 Point Drive N., Dunkirk.

The public and city officials are encouraged to attend this service commemorating the birth of the American Flag. The rain-out location will be the Elks Lodge at 428 Central Ave.

A chicken barbecue will be held Saturday at the Forestville Fire Station from noon until sold out. Dine in or take-out is available.

The menu will include chicken cooked by the firefighters, bacon ranch macaroni salad, corn on the cob, roll, and strawberry shortcake.
