Van Miller tourney set for Friday
Van Miller, grew up in the small town of Dunkirk and graduated in 1945 from Dunkirk High School.
His house sat right were the football field is.
From there, he started his game announcing career right from the booth at the Dunkirk High School field, that now has a Wall of Fame named after him. Also under the booth is a street sign named after Van – Van Miller Way!!!
The City of Dunkirk has to replace the signs during the year as people keep stealing them, so Van has really left a mark in Dunkirk.
The Van Miller Hometown Hero Golf Tournament is set for Friday at Shorewood Country Club and has people flying in from out of town to participate.
Two, $2,000 scholarships are given away each year to two lucky Dunkirk High School students.
This is the sixth year of having the tournament and it has grown larger every year. Tournament committee member Stephanie Pulvino stated, “Miller has never forgotten his roots, and he is very happy that this event can give back to the community. That’s why he is our Hometown Hero.”
This year’s MC will be Bill Polian. Also in attendance will be Buffalo Bills alumni athletes Lou Piccone, Paul Macguire, Ed Rutkowski, Booker Edgerson, Al Bemiller, Will Fowler, Mark Kelso and Charley Ferguson.
“The prizes and auctions get bigger every year,” Polvino said. “This is a time when people of all ages, and areas come together for a very special man who deserves all the accolades he gets. People just love Van.”
