Fest spotlights great treasure

One of the greatest assets to northern Chautauqua County is Lake Erie. On Saturday in Memorial Park in Dunkirk, an event educating and celebrating the Great Lake will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 40 exhibitors and a number of vendors will be in attendance for The Great Lakes Experience Festival in Dunkirk. The mission of the event is to focus on the environment and ecology of the Great Lakes as well as the heritage of the region.

Some of the exhibits include a zoomobile, a primate sanctuary and a butterfly tent. Some of the area organizations participating are the Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club, the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy and the Jamestown Audubon Society. In addition, there are opportunities for biking, kayaking, youth fishing and archery.

Last year’s event topped 1,000 for attendance. Saturday’s event offers double the exhibits and vendors. It will be a special day to celebrate an area treasure.
