Suicide, attempted murder in Barcelona

WESTFIELD – Local authorities are investigating an attempted murder, suicide that occurred early Thursday morning in Barcelona involving a Lancaster couple.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m., reporting a female victim with a head wound showing up at a Route 5 residence in Westfield. Deputies from the sheriff”s office and Westfield Police responded to an apartment duplex and found a female victim with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her head. The female victim had gone to a neighbor’s residence at which time the neighbor called the for help.

Officers learned that a male subject, Sam H. Reynolds, 38, of Lancaster, was involved in the incident and was still in the area.

While searching in the area of the Barcelona Beach and Marina, officers heard a gunshot come from near the breakwall and the shore of Lake Erie. Reynolds was located on the beach, dead with a single gunshot to his head, in an apparent suicide.

The female, Nicole Sheehan, 29, of Lancaster was transported to Westfield Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., where she is still receiving treatment for her injuries.

At this time, she is listed in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Reynolds and Sheehan were a couple and had traveled to the Barcelona area to celebrate Sheehan’s birthday, which was June 17. The investigation is ongoing.
