Cattaraugus County to host poultry seminar

LITTLE VALLEY – The Cattaraugus County De-partment of Economic Development, Planning, and Tourism, and Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Allegany and Cattaraugus counties will host a seminar for farmers, rural residents and others interested in diversifying into poultry production to produce eggs and meat on a small scale.

The seminar will be held on June 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cattaraugus County Government Building at 303 Court St. in Little Valley. The seminar is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is recommended.

Residents concerned about rising costs and nutrition are becomingly increasingly interested in home production of chickens for eggs and meat. This seminar will explore the requirements and process of entering poultry production on a small scale.

Lynn Bliven, Agricul-tural Issues Leader for Cornell Cooperative Exten-sion and instructor for the Cornell University Small Farms Program, will present her experiences with producing eggs and raising poultry on her own small farm, and will also cover regulatory requirements for home poultry production. There will be sufficient time devoted to questions and answers as well.
