Rodney B. Gurney

GOWANDA – Rodney B. Gurney of Maltbie Road, Gowanda passed away unexpectedly Thursday April 24, 2014 at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. He was 78.

Born May 22, 1935 in Gowanda, he was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Marcinkiewicz) Gurney.

A New York State retiree, Rod was a steam-fitter/plumber for the former Gowanda Psychiatric Center. He worked for New York State for 25 years. In the late ’50s early ’60s, Rod owned and operated the former Riviera, a tavern/ bar that was a popular hangout for locals in its day. The Riviera was located on Water Street in Gowanda.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Rod enjoyed his fishing trips that he and his friends would take to northern Ontario, Canada. His memberships included the Perrysburg Conservation Club, the Slovenian Club and the Gowanda Moose. Years ago Rod was part of the crew that enjoyed and hunted at what was known as the Ponderosa on Hawkins Road.

Survivors include Ramona Allen – Mona and Rod shared their life for more than 35 years; 3 sons, Michael Gurney of Collins, Patrick Gurney of Gowanda and Lance (Kelly) Gurney of Little River S.C.; a daughter, Lynda (Jon) Badger of Houston, TX; grandchildren Joshua, Laura and Justin Gurney, along with a brother Robert (Beverly) Gurney of Florida and Gowanda. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call at the SCHINDLER FUNERAL HOME, 44 Center St., Gowanda from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2014 with a Memorial Service to follow @11a.m. Burial to follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Gowanda
