Calling all amateur gardeners in Fredonia
As part of Fredonia History Days, chaired by Town Historian Todd Langworthy, Festivals Fredonia Inc. is planning to host the second annual Amateur Gardener’s contest in Fredonia. Organizers are looking for the 2014 summer season’s best gardens in the village of Fredonia. All amateur gardeners, including children and families, who are residents of the village of Fredonia are welcome and encouraged to participate. Show off your community spirit and your green thumbs.
Entry forms with requirements, criteria and rules for the contest can be downloaded from www.festivalsfredonia.com at the bottom of the Fredonia History Page, use tabs on the upper left to get to the FHD page. Forms will also be available for pickup at the Fredonia Village Hall, at the Water Department Office and the Fredonia Darwin R. Barker Library. Entry forms must be completed and mailed to Festivals Fredonia Inc., Garden Contest Coordinator, PO Box 273, Fredonia, 14063, no later than July 11.
Contestants may submit entries in two different categories for this contest, flower gardens and/or vegetable gardens, and prizes will be awarded to the winner(s) in each category. Participants may enter a garden in one or both categories. Gardens must be planted and maintained by the participants; professionally landscaped or maintained gardens are not eligible for participation. Vegetable gardens must consist of a variety of at least six different vegetables. Herbs will be permitted, but will only count as one item in the requirement for variety. Flower gardens must include at least six varieties of flowering plants or shrubs.
Gardens will be judged by a panel chosen by Festivals Fredonia Inc. on July 19 and 20. Entrants can, but are not required to be present for judging and winners will be announced the following week. In addition to prizes, the winner will also get bragging rights as Fredonia’s Best Gardner until the following year’s contest.
