David Denton Hardenburg
David Denton Harden-burg, 88 years old, of Webster Road in Portland, New York, passed away peace-fully at his home on Sunday morning, June 29, 2014 with his loving family by his side.
David was born in Port-land, New York, on November 6, 1925 to the late John and Winifred Skinner Hardenburg.
He was a lifetime resident of the area. He was a graduate of Brocton Central School, where he was valedictorian of his class. He was a graduate of Cornell University, attaining a bachelors degree in agriculture and a masters degree in business.
David also served his country during World War II from 1944-1946 in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater as a Radio Operator with a rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon re-turning from the war he was employed at Allegheny Ludlum Steel of Dunkirk, New York, as an accountant. He was also employed at one time as a school bus driver. Having worked all his life on the family grape farm, he took over the operation of it from his father in 1963.
David belonged to the Tri Church Parish of Brocton, New York. He belonged to the Board of Assessors of Portland, New York, he was a member of the town of Portland Planning Board, the village of Brocton Library Board, and was the Assessor for the town of Portland for several years. Besides loving and enjoying his family, his church, his farm and community, David was a Ham Radio Operator.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pauline; one daughter, Jan (Bob) Aiello of Horseheads, New York; two sons, Jay (Maria) Hardenburg of Portland, and John (Carol) Hardenburg of Portland; seven grandchildren; Bobby Aiello, Jared Aiello, Molly Aiello, Nicholas Hardenburg, Alicia Kinne, Janine Ransom and Justin Harden-burg; and five great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Shirley Hardenburg McNair.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday morning, July 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Tri Church Parish, currently meeting at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church at 12 Central Ave. in Brocton, New York. The Rev. Kevin Conley and the Rev. Mark Monfort will officiate. Interment will follow at the Portland Evergreen Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Morse Funeral Home in Brocton, New York from 7-9 p.m. today.
