Area’s elite take the diamond

Northern Chautauqua County will be the place to be for Little League action in the coming weeks.

In baseball, Dunkirk will host the 11-12-year-old baseball district tourney and Brocton will host the 9-10 baseball district tourney.

The tournament in Brocton gets underway Monday, July 7 as Westfield battles Dunkirk. With five teams in the tournament, the semifinal games are scheduled for Sunday, July 20 at noon and 3 p.m. The championship game will be played Tuesday, July 22 at 6 p.m.

The tournament in Dunkirk follows the same dates, as Brocton will take on Hanover on Monday, July 7. Just like the Brocton tournament, the semifinals will be played on Sunday, July 20 and the finals are slated for Tuesday, July 22. The semifinals and finals will be played at Bemus.

As for softball, Fredonia Little League will play host for both the 9-10 and 11-12 year old sectional softball tournaments and Dunkirk Little League is hosting the State Tournament for Girls ages 11-12.

The 11-12 softball sectionals begin Saturday, July 5 at the Eagan Sports Complex and the championship game will be played Monday, July 7. The winner of that tournament will be playing in Dunkirk, starting Wednesday, July 9 in the state championship tournament at Dunkirk. That tournament will conclude Sunday, July 13 with the championship game at Wright Park.

“We are fortunate to host the Sectionals in Fredonia and the State tournament in Dunkirk,” District 38 administrator, Marv Cummings said. “There are a lot of dedicated people here and Dunkirk has a beautiful complex and a dedicated board. We started in mid-January to start prepping. We talk about all the stuff all winter. As the season gets closer, there is a lot of planning that goes on.”

Fredonia hosted the Little League softball state championships just three years ago. The fact it is returning to Northern Chautauqua County so soon speaks to how well the tournament has been organized in the past.

“There are six different sections,” Cummings said. “For us to get it back that quick is unheard of. They know it will be a well-run tournament. They like to have tournaments close to the thruway. Dunkirk is an ideal site because of the beautiful facility and dedicated board and Fredonia has nice fields and good help goes a long way.”

The 9-10 softball sectionals will be held at the Eagan Sports Complex. That tournament begins July 19, and the championship will be held the following day.

Cummings noted it’s a great chance for the community to see some of the finest baseball the state has to offer.

“They will see some good baseball and softball,” he concluded. “The level of play will be exceptional. It’s a fun time. Dunkirk will have a Chicken BBQ on July 10. So many people will be down here. It will be a neat thing for the community. I hope they take advantage of music on the pier and the beach. It’s nice for them to have it here. People will be impressed with how we do things.”
